The
Late Bloomer's Guide to Success at Any Age : After fifteen
years as a strategic consultant and arts management professional, Susan
Sully decided to take the plunge and pursue her lifelong dream of being
a writer. taking the skills she'd acquired as a strategic planner to formulate
a plan of her own, Sully realized that, for late bloomers at least, life
change takes more than a good plan - it takes a whole new way of thinking
about self, life, and work. In THE LATE BLOOMERS GUIDE TO SUCCESS AT ANY
AGE (Quill; an Imprint of HarperCollinsPublishers), Sully shares the secrets
of her success with other late bloomers, drawing upon her experiences
as a strategic planner and writer, as well as her own life-transformation.
Having overcome depression, alcohol addiction and low self-esteem, she
is eager to offer her own experience as a guide for others contemplating
the same dramatic leap.
This book is an inspirational guide for life change that combines the practical aspects of strategic planning with Sully's own brand of unconventional thinking. This program of self-transformation is based upon the idea that late bloomers cannot change simply because they plan to do so; they must also reshape outgrown perceptions and limitations about themselves, and be willing to accept risk if they are to achieve the happiness and fulfillment they crave. For that reason, Sully introduces the TEN PRINCIPLES OF UNCONVENTIONAL WISDOM - new guidelines that challenge low self-esteem, conformity and fear of failure - in order to celebrate change, authenticity, and joyful self- expression. These principles challenge conventional wisdom and encourage the adaptation of unconventional ways of thinking and being.
In addition, Sully offers a range of meditations, scores of exercises, and numerous real-life examples designed to help late bloomers everywhere refocus their energies on their dreams and begin working towards them. Written by a late bloomer for other late bloomers, THE LATE BLOOMERS GUIDE TO SUCCESS AT ANY AGE is for anyone who has ever thought about turning their dreams into reality.
Hey, Gang!
A nice book and perfect for many of us. Since so many people in "program" suffer from self-esteem issues, "BLOOMING" late is a by-product that this book can help overcome. As Sully states in her book;
"Many late bloomers have a hard time putting themselves first in their lives. Perhaps this is because so many of us suffer from low self-esteem, are perennial people pleasure, or have grown accustomed to measuring and judging ourselves by other people's standards. Whatever the reason, late bloomers often find themselves leading lives of tiring and often thankless service to people , institutions, and value systems that have little to do with their own true values or identities."
By example she talks about RISK as an important factor in overcoming this self-esteem block.
". . . I learned to enjoy risk once I realized how big the loss of never risking at all could be."
I, too, am a late bloomer. I found my way past the stumbling blocks some years ago by way of the program, but was able to relate to many of the suggestions in this book. She offers some exercises that work as a personal inventory, helping to put the focus on your self. (Sound familiar?) She offers suggestions that help you to think "outside of the box". Not all of her suggestions are fantastic or even new, but by attempting to work through any of her suggestions, one will have a catalyst to set their life on a more desirable track. Her attitude is great and her writing is very comfortable.

I find that many of the books we have the opportunity to review include some sort of "STEP" or "PRINCIPLE" program. This is the first where the "suggested principles" are so unconventional they border on comedic. This humor, however, kept my attention and I was interested enough to read on to find out why I should "Put all my eggs in one basket" or why I should "Leap before I look?"
This is a great subject for "Steppers" and one that often comes up in meetings. I think you'll like this book if you're ready to make some "late changes."
